Colocation FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Colocation?
A: Colocation is a service in which a company will connect a server that you own to
the internet. If you do not already have one, some companies offer to build a
server for you. This is the key difference between dedicated servers and colocated servers. In a dedicated environment, the server itself is owned by the web hosting company, whereas in a colocated environment, the server is your own. Waveform Technology offers both options.
Q: Where will by servers be physically colocated?
A: Your servers will be colocated in our Troy, Michigan Data Center, located near 14 Mile Rd and John R Roads.
Q: What size tower server may be colocated at your facility?
A: Tower servers are housed on ventilated, industrial steel shelving, not on rack cabinet shelving. Our shelving is set to allow a typical mid-tower case no larger than 22" high x 9" wide x 20" deep
Q: Do you allow user owned firewalls?
A: Yes, as long as the firewall can sit on top of your tower server, and you provide a 3-outlet power cord meeting our specifications. A suitable cord can be purchased from Lowes using
this link
. We can not accept full-size
plug strips for this application, or any non-grounding cord.
Q: Do we allow IRC servers?
A: Yes, but as with all our services, they must comply with our AUP, which does not allow, among other things, illegal activities.
Q: Do you allow crossconnects?
A: Crossconnects are priced on application starting as little as $10.00/month. We offer crossconnects between servers, between cabinets or with other carriers in our facility. We offer DS0 to OC-3 to Gigabit Ethernet crossconnects. Our facility is carrier neutral.
Q: What is your average latency and throughput?
A: Test for yourself! Go to our Ping Times page.
Q: What do I need to include if I ship my server to your facility with UPS/Fed Ex/etc.?
A: You must include your server and a power cord, and a signed copy of the order form from your colocation
contract.
If you are sending us a rack-mount server you must also include
rack
rails (see below).
We will provide an Ethernet cable to connect your server to our
network. We strongly recommend that you have your server professionally packaged if you don't have suitable materials on
hand.
A well-packed server is wrapped in several layers of bubble wrap on all sides, and will have about a 2" layer
of styrofoam packing peanuts on all sides and be in a sturdy, snug-fitting box. We can not be responsible for any damage
sustained by your server in shipment and recommend insuring your server with your chosen shipper.
We recommend DHL They seem to take very good care of servers in general.
Q: What type of rack rails do I need to install my server into one of your racks?
A: We require adjustable rails that will mount in the standard EIA hole pattern using 10-32 size screws. Our server racks
are enclosed 4-post cabinets with threaded holes in the front and rear posts. If you need assistance choosing the correct
rack rails, please contact us and we will help you with your selection.
